196 million year old fossil found in the car park!
You may have noticed some builders in the car park recently, working on the 150 year old wall which had collapsed. Well, to Ms Lowthion's delight, an archaeologist visited last week and found this amazing fossil in the wall!
Jack Wonfor of Wight Coast Fossils - and previous Island VI Form student - has identified the fossil for us as from Lyme Regis way. He says "the cross section through it has the classic Jurassic Coast 'Dog's tooth Calcite', the colouration of the rock also fits. I'm sure this is a Metaphioceras Ammonite from Monmouth beach just West of Lyme Regis. It'll be early Jurassic, probably looking 196 million years old." How amazing! Thanks, Jack!
