Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

We have now reached May and exams are well and truly underway. Can I please remind you that study leave doesn't start for Year 13 until Monday 19 May and, until that point, all students are expected to be in lessons. After 19 May there may still be a requirement for you to attend some of your lessons.

This week we have had three successful visits. We have had 54 German students with us and it was lovely to see our students interacting and benefitting from this cultural exchange. On Tuesday, we also had a visit from 30 Year 8 students from The Island Free School. Today, we were lucky enough to have a visitor from the House of Lords - Baroness Natalie Bennett.

Looking ahead to next week, please remember that Monday is a Bank Holiday so the College will be closed. On Wednesday, at 10:15, we have the whole Year Group photo for Year 13. Mrs Allen has emailed about this, but please can you make sure you are there on time. We also have the Ability Dogs 4 Young Poeple charity coming in to give a talk to a small number of our Year 12 students.

On Wednesday 25 June, we will have our first VI Form Award Evening from 5.30 - 7.30 pm. This will be a lovely night of celebration.  Staff are currently in the process of nominating students for awards, so Keep an eye out for invitations at the end of May/beginning of June.

I hope you have a lovely long weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 6 May.

Phil Pearce-Jones, Head of School

Mental Health Support

The Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is currently working in our college.  The MHST team supports schools to implement a whole school approach (WSA) to mental health and wellbeing and support the development of school policies and procedures to improve emotional health and wellbeing.

Their work focuses on promoting resilience and helping young people to develop skills and techniques to manage their emotions. For us this support includes 1 to 1 support. This is provided by Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) who work within a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) framework which is an evidenced based intervention to support mild to moderate mental health conditions.  The EMHPs can help with anxiety, low mood and some emotional dysregulation.  If you think you, as a student, would benefit from the MHST, then please speak to Student Services or Mr Pearce-Jones.
