Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

Today we officially say farewell to Year 13 as they start their study leave. Exams are very much underway for them and we wish them every success in the completion of these. A letter has been sent home this week about results day arrangements. Year 13 students who are completing BTECs will still be required to come in and, if students wish to access staff for subjects they still have exams to complete, they are more than welcome to do so.

This week we were lucky to have Chichester University in to talk to Year 12 about making the right choices around course selection for degrees. We also had HTP in to talk to Year 12 about apprenticeship opportunities.

Last Friday, we made a new appointment. Mr Phil Stott has been appointed Head of Year for our current Year 12 (moving into 13). He will take up this role from 1 June and will, along with Student Services, support the year group in their next 12 month journey. For our new Year 12 students joining us in September, we are pleased to announce that Mr Chris Williams will be taking up the post of their Head of Year from 1 September.

Finally, next week we have the Samaritans in to provide our final enrichment talk of the half term for Year 12. We break for half term at 3.15 pm on Friday 23 May and we are back in college on Monday 2 June. Looking ahead, the college will be closed to students on Friday 20 June due to the Isle of Wight Festival.

Have a lovely weekend!

Phil Pearce-Jones
Head of School

It has been a very busy few weeks for Year 12 geographers. They have been undertaking coastal and urban fieldwork in Ventnor and Portsmouth. This is invaluable for them to gain experience of 'real life' geography linked to coastal management and regeneration of urban areas. Students had the opportunity to develop their fieldwork skills by carrying out surveys and other data collection techniques.

We were also fortunate to host Dr Sabine Wulf from the School of the Environment and Life Sciences at Portsmouth University for a physical geography inspired session. Students participated in a coastal map activity and completed an assessment of the UK's hazard risks. They also gained an insight into studying geography at Portsmouth and the potential career opportunities available for geography graduates.

As part of the BTEC Sport course, students are required to lead a sporting activity. One of our students, Jaz, volunteers at iSurf - Mobile Surf School, after completing the Wave programme a few years ago, so she decided to teach some of her class how to surf for her assessment. Isurf were very accommodating and allowed her to use their equipment in order to complete her coursework. The students fully immersed themselves into the activity and had a great time. Well done, Jaz, for a very good session, and thank you to iSurf for their support.

Walk the Wight 2025

Huge congratulations to everyone in The Island VI Form community who took part in this year's Mountbatten Isle of Wight Walk The Wight! Whether you completed 4 miles or 26.5 miles (or any of the distances in between!), you are amazing! Our official #TeamVIForm students and staff raised over £400! We know that many others had individual fundraising pages as well. Well done to you all!

Mr Rock Vs The Ascent for the Huntington's Disease Association

Mr Rock is at it again! After the huge success of his charity walk last year around the island non-stop, he is now facing an even bigger challenge. This year he is trying to walk uphill to a height of 9000m (which is higher than Mount Everest) by walking up Bonchurch Down 38 times. To put this into context, the average UK stairwell has 13 steps in it. If you wanted to do his challenge on that one set, you would have to walk up them 2214 times!!!! He is again doing it all in one go, starting on 7 June and going through until he has completed it. We all think he's nuts, but it is for a great charity, The Huntington's Disease Association, which is personally important for him as he has the condition. He is again hoping to raise awareness of the condition, while making money for the HDA who support families like his who struggle with the disease.  He also hopes to inspire people as to what you can complete when you set your mind to it. We wish him all the luck in the world.

If you would like to sponsor him, please click here or scan the QR code to go to his Just Giving page. Any amount you can give makes a huge difference to families impacted by this cruel condition.
