Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

First of all, I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who came and supported our quiz night last night arranged by the Student Voice team and in aid of the Ability Dogs and Year 13 Prom. We raised an amazing £607.00! It was an amazing event, and it was lovely to have our four-legged friends in attendance.

Can I remind Year 12, if you haven't made appointments for parents' evening on the 2 April, can you please do this asap? This is an in-person event and appointments can be made through the Arbor App. If you are having issues, please contact reception and they will help you.

On Tuesday 25 March, we have the University of Southampton coming in to give two talks. One aimed at Year 13 on student finance (how to apply for finance for university and budgeting etc) and another talk for Year 12 focused on 'Why Higher Education?'. A sign-up form will be out shortly.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Head of School

Easter Quiz

Thursday 6 March saw The Island VI Form Hall packed full of students, staff, family and friends for the Easter Charity Quiz, organised by Student Voice.

The evening was another chance to bring our school community together, as well as raise some much needed funds for a local charity and the Year 13 Prom. We were really pleased to welcome Ability Dogs for Young People as our chosen charity and met a couple of their puppies, and we heard all about their projects to support young people across the Isle of Wight.

The questions were largely written by the students, and it was an incredibly competitive evening with two teams tied for the top spot. The winning team, including some teachers from Medina College, retained the coveted trophy - but only just pipped the best student team! The event raised over £607.

Quizmaster, teacher Vix Lowthion said "It was such a fun night and great to see even more staff and students taking part. The students’ questions provided a real challenge - and the teams were incredibly competitive! Huge thanks to the whole Student Voice team, catering, teaching and premises staff. Hopefully we will be back in the summer.”

STEM Careers Talks

This week, we have taken part in three live stream events where specialists in their field have spoken about their careers and their own journey to reach their current  position.

Monday - Insight into the places around the world that a geological engineer might take you
Tuesday - the revelation that the game franchise 'Grand Theft Auto' is actually Scottish and that there are many varied routes into the gaming industry, but the importance of keeping a portfolio of work (graphics or music) or experience. Friday - tracking and monitoring Manta Rays.

Next week there are two additional talks that you can attend:
Thursday - Lions and science and x-rays, oh my!
Friday - the endless possibilities of a career in STEM.
