Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

We have completed the first half of the Autumn Term and it has been a pleasure to see Year 12 and Year 13/14 make such a productive start to the year. Attendance overall has been good this half term, but it has slipped a bit in this last week. Can I remind you all please that good attendance is classified as over 95%.

Year 13 have made a good start to their university applications with our Oxford and Cambridge and Medicine applicants all making the deadline of 15 October.

Last week, mental health awareness day went really well and I was really impressed with all the thought-provoking messages that were written on the yellow wall of positivity.

After half term we go straight in Year 13 trial exams. Please make sure you know your exam timetable and revise over half term. Additionally, we have external maths and English resit exams taking place.

Looking ahead, we have our Open Evening on Thursday 13 November, 5-8pm. If you know any Year 11 students considering their options for next year, please do highlight this date with them.

Finally, we have our Christmas Quiz run by student voice on Wednesday 26 November, 7-9pm. This promises to be a really lovely night so please attend if you can and join in.

Don’t forget that Monday 3 November is a staff development day, so the site is closed to students.

Have a lovely break and we will see you all on Tuesday 4 November.

UK Universities Fair

On Friday 10 October, 40 students from The Island VI Form travelled to the Brighton Amex Arena to meet and engage with over 50 Higher Education providers. Universities, apprenticeship providers and the armed forces were all represented. The students were able to talk about courses, university life and a range of other post-18 issues. there were also several seminars covering a range of topics from UCAS applications to student finance.

This was an invaluable experience and we are grateful to Mr Stott, Ms Fincham and Ms Carroll for organising the trip and ensuring the maximised the opportunity, despite the very early start!

The annual Law Service at Newport Minster - a custom harking back to medieval times - took place this week, and Island VI Form Law student, Sara Setzu was involved.

Presiding judge of the Western Circuit, Justice Thomas Linden, resident judge Michael Bowes, the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, chaplains, the coroner and the chairman of the Isle of Wight council all paraded through the streets to Newport Minster to mark the start of the new Law Year. Sara was asked to lead the congregation in a prayer during the service, alongside representatives of the police force and prison service.

Sara said "I found this experience to be eye-opening to the endless number of opportunities and roles in the legal system that are usually overlooked. Getting to meet and speak to judges and lawyers, all unique from each other, allowed me to get an idea of what a career in law will look like, and I am and will be forever thankful to have been invited to read a prayer as a prospective law student. It is an experience that has helped enlighten the different paths in law which I could follow and has opened up a new world of opportunities for me."
