Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

It has been lovely to see some glorious sunshine this week. It definitely makes you feel that Spring is almost here. We have had another busy week, with BTEC results being released for some our students, and we had two enrichment sessions.

The first one was on the topic of domestic violence, led by the Domestic Violence Service. This talk gave some very important messages around healthy relationships.

Our second session was around LGBTQ+ and took place at the Guildhall Museum in Newport, where students looked at the local poet Charlotte Mew and connected this to how LGBTQ+ rights have evolved since the 1920s and why it is important to still fight today. There are some images from the session below.

Next week we have the University of Southampton coming in to deliver two talks during the day to students on Tuesday 25 March. Can students please sign up to these talks as they are really important.

1) Year 13 - student finance. How to apply for student loans, tuition fees etc for University. 10.00 am.
2) Year 12 - Why University? An exploration of what the benefits of going to university are. 11.00 am.

Students - please sign up to the talks here.

Please can I remind you that Year 12 Parents' Evening is on 2 April. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so through Arbor. This evening will be more than an evening to discuss your child's progress, but we will also have the Isle of Wight College, HTP, the University of Portsmouth and the University of Chichester in attendance to discuss Post 18 options. There will also be a presentation on the EPQ and the Mental Health Support Team (MHST) will be on hand to explain the support they offer.

Have a lovely weekend!

Well done to Year 12 student, Lydia, who has secured a place at a highly competitive, over-subscribed University of Cambridge residential during the Easter break! The title of the residential is 'Medieval Worlds: Manuscripts, Texts and Film' and it will be held at Corpus Christi College. Good luck, Lydia, we look forward to hearing all about it on your return!

Post 16 Transport Policy Statement Consultation 2025/2026

The local authority is required to consult on a Post 16 transport policy statement each academic year.

The Isle of Wight Council does offer, under discretionary power, a transport service to enable Post 16 students with special educational needs and disabilities (usually with an Education, Health and Care Plan) to access a place that is the closest suitable provision for their needs. The local authority currently charges a parental contribution for this service.

The Council proposes to increase a parental contribution from £570 in the 2024/25 academic year to £582.54 for 2025/26 academic year, in line with CPI (Consumer Price Index). The proposed contributions have been benchmarked with other local authorities and fall into the lower sector of charges.

The consultation is live and will close at 11:59pm on Friday 25 April. The local authority invites your views/comments on the Draft Policy which can be found here. Please send any views on the draft policy to strategic.planning@iow.gov.uk by the closing date.
