Weekly Updates from The Island VI Form

Week 3 of this half-term sees us finishing earlier due to the Isle of Wight Festival. Please be aware we are not open Friday 19th June or Monday 22nd June. Students however, will have to work independently online via google classroom.

It was a pleasure to host a launch party for 'Boundless Wight', our Young Enterprise Team, this week. We were delighted to hold an event celebrating their achievements during a highly successful year that saw them reach the national finals.

Our annual Awards Evening is taking place next week on Wednesday 24 June. Invitations have been sent to all our deserving award winners. If you have been invited but have not yet responded, please do so as soon as possible.

On Thursday evening, we have our Fashion show for our Year 13 Fashion students held at Independent Arts. It is lovely to have two occasions in one week when we are celebrating student successes.

Finally, can I please remind you that the Year 12 Trial Exams will be starting on the 26 June. There is no study leave whilst these are on. It is vitally important students focus on revising well for these exams as they indicate to us whether a student is progressing onto Year 13 or not.

If you are going to the festival, have a safe and enjoyable time.

Happy Weekend!

Phil Pearce-Jones - Head of School

Boundless Wight Launches at Isle of Wight VI Form with Celebration Event Recognising Student Enterprise Success

Our student Young Enterprise team, Boundless Wight, officially launched in style yesterday evening at The Island VI Form, bringing together students, local businesses, community leaders and supporters for a memorable celebration of creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurship.

The main hall was transformed for the occasion, with carefully coordinated colours, balloons and stylish event décor creating a professional launch atmosphere. Guests enjoyed canapés, drinks and refreshments while celebrating the achievements of the student team behind Boundless Wight and the journey that brought the project to life.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the High Sheriff Award, awarded by High Sheriff Nigel Hartley, marking his first High Sheriff Award and recognising the commitment, ambition and achievements of the young entrepreneurs.

The event was attended by a wide range of influential figures and organisations from across the Island, including Ian Dore, Chair of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Vix Lowthion, Newport Central Ward Councillor, and representatives from many of the Island’s leading businesses, charities and community organisations.

Guests included representatives from:

  • Mountbatten
  • Ed-Wise
  • Red Funnel
  • The Isle of Wight Observer
  • Quarr Abbey, including members of the Brothers’ community
  • Cherry Godfrey
  • HRD
  • Blackgang
  • Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce
  • IWCP
  • Lifeline
  • Meridian 3
  • Patter Products
  • PC Consultants
  • Red Squirrel Property Shop
  • Teemill
  • Island Toys
  • Snacks and Ladders

The evening also welcomed the family of one of the founders of the original Walk the Wight game, celebrating the link between island heritage, creativity and the new Boundless Wight project.

The launch recognised not only the hard work of the students but also the extensive support network behind them. Special thanks and presentations were made to Tracy Osborn, who has been a key business mentor throughout the journey, providing guidance, encouragement and expertise as the team developed their ideas.

Recognition was also given to Dawn Garey and Thomas Kidd, whose support as teachers helped guide the students through the process, encouraging them to develop their entrepreneurial skills, confidence and determination.

The event was supported by family, friends and staff from Isle of Wight VI Form, who joined together to celebrate what has been a remarkable achievement for the students involved.

Speaking about the launch, the Boundless Wight team said:

"We are incredibly proud to finally launch Boundless Wight and share our journey with so many people who have supported us. The encouragement from local businesses, mentors, teachers, friends and family has been amazing, and this evening was a fantastic celebration of everything we have achieved together."

Boundless Wight represents the power of student enterprise and the strength of the Isle of Wight community, showcasing what can be achieved when young people are supported to develop ideas, take risks and create something meaningful.

University Taster Lectures

On Tuesday 16th June, over 50 Island VI Form students attended a wide range of online University Taster Lectures. The universities involved included Warwick, Surrey and Edinburgh. Subjects as diverse as Archaeology, Media, Law and Physics were included in the 24 different sessions. These lectures allowed the students to get a feel for what university study will be like, and also an insight into life at the different university providers.

Festival Safety Mini Roadshow

Thank you to all of the professionals who came in last Friday to run the Festival Safety Mini Roadshow. NHS Inclusion, NHS Sexual Health and Smoke Free Island all provided really useful advice, helping our students to be informed and prepared.

If you are heading to the Isle of Wight Festival this weekend, remember to look after yourselves and each other.
