Twilight Practical at the University of Southampton

15 A level chemists attended a Twilight Practical workshop at The University of Southampton last week. The students extracted trimyristin from nutmeg by solvent extraction. They then went on to purify and analyse the chemical using rotary evaporators, Infra-red spectrometry, melting point and thin layer chromatography. The students experienced a working university laboratory and had a tour of the chemical engineering laboratory. All the students successfully extracted their trimyristin and enjoyed the experience, even though it was very hot! Thank you to the University of Southampton for providing this hands-on, practical experience, giving our students an insight into what studying Chemistry is like at university.
