Classics Trip to Athens

On Sunday 23 March, 24 Island VI Form Classics students embarked on an exciting trip to Athens. Over the course of five days, they managed to include visits to some of Athens’ most famous ancient ruins sites, such as the Acropolis, Agora of Athens and the Temple of Ancient Zeus. They also visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Delphi, home to the Temple of Apollo. Finally, a day trip to the archeological site of Mycenae, home to Agamemnon, before he embarked on the Trojan War.

Students were able to see the treasuries they study in A Level Classics lessons as well as some amazing scenery. They were extremely fortunate in that, on day three, it was a national holiday in commemoration of Greek Independence since 1821 and saw many celebrations across the capital city. They also had perfect weather conditions for the amount of walking involved and some extremely knowledgeable guides to answer all the students' questions.

Trip leader, Miss Lowthion said "It was a real privilege to lead our VI Form students in their exploration of Greece. The city of Athens was bustling and full of history, but our two excursions into the mountains illustrated that the ancient Greeks also sought peace and sanctuary in the hills. We are now looking forward to the students putting their exciting direct experiences into supporting their university course choices as well as towards their work in the summer exams."

Thank you to Miss Lowthion, Mr Bridle and Mr Harrison for giving up their time to support the students and providing this amazing learning opportunity outside the classroom. Thank you, also, to the students, who were excellent ambassadors for The Island VI Form, who fully embraced every moment of this trip.
