A Level Geology Field Trip

This week, our A Level Geology students have been fortunate to take their learning outside of the classroom as they embarked on a field trip across North Devon and Cornwall. The weather made the sites they visited even more stunning!

In the first two days they visited and learnt about the Ilfracombe slates, sandstone and limestone at Hele Beach, walked the South West coastal path at Croyde Bay and Baggy Point, the spectacular chevron folds at Millook Haven, folded sandstones at Bude, massive folded strata at Hartland Quay.

Days three and four saw them visit Delabole Slate Quarry, Trebetherick Point and Greenaway Beach, lead mines and the remote coastline at Pentire Point where they saw huge deposits of pillow lava basalts with vesicles and amygloidal textures. Finally, on the way home they stopped off on Dartmoor at Haytor and saw its large crystals (megacrysts) in the granite outcrop.

The students were so enthusiastic and really made the most of this fantastic opportunity. Just five weeks to go until their first Geology exam. We wish them every success!
